A gutter that's visibly pulling away from the roofline — sagging in the middle, gapping behind the fascia, or hanging loose at one end — is one of the more obvious signs something needs attention. The cause isn't always the gutter itself; often it's what the gutter is attached to, or what's inside it.
The Weight of Standing Water and Debris
Gutters are designed to handle moving water, not standing water. When leaves, seed pods and other debris build up and block the downspout, water has nowhere to go. A gutter full of wet debris can weigh far more than an empty one, and that extra weight puts constant strain on the hangers holding it to the house.
Failing or Undersized Hangers
Gutters are held up by hangers or spikes driven into the fascia at intervals. Over time, hangers can loosen, rust, or simply be spaced too far apart for the load they're carrying — especially on older systems that used fewer, weaker fasteners than a properly spec'd modern install.
Deteriorated Fascia
Even good hangers can't hold on to fascia that's soft or rotted underneath. If the wood behind your gutter has taken on moisture damage, fasteners lose their grip and the whole system can start to sag or pull loose, even without unusual water volume.
Ice Buildup in Winter
During Ohio winters, ice can form in a gutter that isn't draining properly, and the weight and expansion of that ice adds significant stress to hangers and seams. A gutter that's marginal to begin with often shows its first real damage after a hard freeze-thaw season.
What to Do About It
If a section is just starting to sag, re-securing it to solid fascia with properly spaced hangers is often enough. If the fascia underneath is damaged, that needs to be addressed first — hanging a repaired gutter back onto rotted wood just delays the same problem. And if the system as a whole is undersized or worn out, it may be a better long-term move to replace it with a properly sized seamless system rather than repeatedly re-hanging the same tired gutters.
